Back from OBS. With a great performance.
Yo you all! I am back from OBS and it was...very wet and I smelled a bit funky.
Well OBS was fun and all with Kayaking and rock-climbing and hiking.
It kinda went this way:
-Day 1, We all arrived in school on that rainy day to gather at the sports hall. I swear, when i got there it was like a thermal meltdown. Outside was chilly and wet and cold, then with the entrance still locked and the sports hall closed, everyone was talking and the air was hot and damp. So we just chit-chat till we got the doors opened. Then we got into our 'watches' where we were grouped according to our CCA. Me, being the fun person I was, put Technopreneurship as my CCA since no one else would put it so that i get a random 'watch'. A miracle happened, I got into the 9th watch which was with the tennis, sailing and a few other people. My friends Nicholas Yue and Shaun Tay was in the watch and it was so fun. Then we all got sent off the Ponggol Jetty for the ferry to Pulau Ubin for OBS. When we got to Pulau Ubin, the people from St Hilda, who were going to be in our camp too were already there. So watch 9 was to be named 'Raffles'. Then came a short briefing by CJ, one of the cooler instructors. Then we all found out the 'Raffles' was the group he was going to facilitate. We were like, 'OMG! WTH! HIM?!' Then we all broke off to our little groups to do some admin. Then after the introduction and stuff, during the surrendering of possessions, I got transferred to another group. Knew it, miracles are short-lived. But I went anyway, I heard the reason was because the other guy who was being tranferred had dislocated his shoulder before and he could not do as much kayaking as my new group was going to be doing. Then i was introduced to Yen Leng whom we shall all refer to as Ah Boo since she requests. Then it was just a short round of photo taking, stock checking, and lunch. Then we carried the tents, helmets and harness to the high elements area. Then we stopped at this open patch mid-way to do the trust fall. It began to rain and we did the activity where everyone fell at least once. So fun, I kinda totally trusted everyone when I fell so it was quite fast. Then it was belaying. A short practise which went by really fast. Then dinner was cooked. I went to pitch the tent while dinner was cooking but then the dinner ended up with burnt rice and we had to eat it. I opened a can of tuna to go with the rice and it was quite okay since the rice lost most of the charred taste in the oil. Then it was a bath followed by packing for the next 3 days of our lives. And Gary turned out the lights on the St Hilda girls while they were bathing, or so I heard.Lights out by 11pm.
-Day 2, we were late to report for morning PT and only started at 7.15am. It was 5 BX and a short run. It was still a bit wet from the rain but we got by. Then we all changed into our wet attire since we were going to do kayaking. 'Battuta' had our buddy watch who was 'Armstrong' with all the ruggers in it. I was paired with Marcus P. for the little trip. Then we went to test the waters. After we got out of the water, there was a catagory 1 storm warning and we all got under shelter. After it cleared, we set off with the kayaks. We had to do capsize drills and then it was off to deeper water before we practice the T-X rescue drill. So we all got off to a rather nice start but I swear the sea is littered with all sorts of rubbish. About halfway there we practised the drill. Marcus and I capsized twice since it was fun. The second time Dao Bin saw a jellyfish and was yelling at us about it and Marcus was like looking around for it. I didn't see anything. so we all got done with the drill and left to finish out trip. After we hit shore, we all carried the kayaks to the beach side campsite which was surrounded by fences. Hiked to our campsite, set up tents and then Chin Whye and I decided that since the tent was set up our tent mates can go for dinner so we left the place and went to cook our instant noodles. I shared with Ian in one mess tin and he said it had sand in it, but no one really cared at that point. Then we went back to our tent and got changed to dry clothes individually. After that, Chin Whye followed the rest to get water while Ian and I just stayed in the tent and I fell asleep in a jiffy.
-Day 3, after the rain night, I woke up at 5.30am to see that it was raining and Chin Whye, Ian and Jonathan were in a rather good mood since our tent was the only one which did not get flooded. And Keng Seng's tent actually collapsed. The rest were sleeping in water. So we came out and changed, and unpitched our tent. Then we packed up and prepared for the hike. And it was still drizzling. So Ah Boo and 'Battuta' set out for the hike. After we reach the top of a hill which was the peak of Pulau Ubin, Ah Boo found out that we left our poncho bag behind and we hiked back the our campsite to get it. When we got there we were overloaded and i ended up with my bag, a gadget pole across my shoulders and 1 tent on each side of the gadget pole. Then we made a beeline from there to camp 2 followed by camp 1. Camp 2, our arrival campsite, was so different from camp 1. When we reached camp 1, the moment I put down my bag, I swear I felt like i could fly. So we set up tents in the path to a beach in camp 1 and then we had 3 hours of rock-climbing in the multi-purpose hall. Followed by a served dinner, only one in the entire camp. We had a nice dinner for once and then gathered at the MPH for a briefing for our sea expedition that was to go on the next day. So it was going to be a average 8-10 hours trip in all. And then we had chosen the sea expedition leaders from each 'watch' and I represented 'Battuta'. So while the rest were having supper, we had a sea ex leaders briefing. And then everyone came back and we briefed our own 'watch'. Then it was bath time followed by lights out. A preparation for the next day.
-Day 4, we all woke up early and unpiched our tents on time. Then we reported for a short session of PT. Then it was breakfast, followed by packing up the campsite and loading up the items onto the safety boats. Then we were preparing to set off. Before that, we had morning circle which was to give blessings for our voyage to sea. With everyone blessed, we set off. We started off with the practice channel crossing.then we headed to Ketam, turned back to camp 2 and did the real channel crossing. Then we hit the other side of the channel, this was followed by a continuous trip down the coastal area of Singapore. Then we did another channel crossing before hitting Pulau Seletar. By then we were running 2 hours late. The we had lunch on our kayaks. Then by 3 pm we headed off again. This time there was a catagory 1 warning so everyone rushed and we managed a record breaking speed to get back. With the last channel crossing we finally hit camp 2 shore.having seen the time, we were only 15 minutes behind the estimated time of arrival. Which also means we caught our 2 hours on the return trip and wash up. It was a good job, and we were asked to cheer. Instead we sung Lord prepare me. It was a huge laugh. Then we went for dinner and bathed. I cooked the eggs they gave and we ate till we were full. My tent was only pitched at 11pm. Then we all slept.[Not before a few games of Big 2]
-Day 5, we woke up late but it didn't matter since everything was done fast. And we skipped PT to do the jetty jump which was fun. Everyone made a commitment then jumped. There were jellyfishes in the water. But it was a quick event. Followed by the store clean up and check in stock were we lost $45.15 worth of stuff. Then we got together to get our certificates, wristband, pen and share our last words. Then it was off the the gift shop after we got our personal belongings back. Got myself 2 polo tees and 1 sleeveless tee. And then it was a short debrief then it was time to go back home! We took a ferry back to Singapore, went through the jetty customs and waited for the coach back to school. Then we went back to school where I joined Ke Li to wait for Nicholas to reach before we went to eat KFC at chinatown then I came home and life went back to normal.
That was how to entire 5 days of my life went.
Saturday, woke up at 9 am, had breakfast and then got home to sleep. I overslept and turned up for the performance JUST on time at 3.20pm where everyone was waiting for me. Then the performance went on. It was a blast. It did not feel scary to be on stage looking at the audience for once. And then we had class at 4pm. And Jean took us since Tara is not in Singapore. We spent the class time planning our masked performance and we made our storyline. Then we had a quick run-through. And class ended. The days are passing way too fast.
Too these few people: Kelleynne, Joscelyn, Sarah, Janel, Kenneth, Andrew and Frederick. Miss you guys at OBS. Felt so weird not talking to you all for 4 nights.
